I found this interesting and thought I'd share it. I'm reading two new books right now...both on Vastu Shastra, which is the Indian science of placement and architecture, based on the vedas (feng shui blossomed from vastu shastra, so they say). So much great info!!! Here's the website if interested: http://www.balancedbookspub.com

The Way of Vastu (excerpt below) has some GREAT info about reducing geopathic stress, color, sound, yantras, mantras, altars and other environmental balancing...I'm learning a lot. -- Daiva

The Power of Color

Just as the different qualities of light that we see in the full spectrum of colors in a rainbow have a powerful balancing effect on your environment, so does color. Whether you know it or not, color impacts your life in positive and negative ways. Your color choices can improve your state of mind or physical well-being because different colors stimulate different types of energy in the body and mind.

Radiation from the sun is composed of seven colors and numerous electromagnetic waves. Colors contain electrical rays, radio waves, infrared (short) waves, ultraviolet (long) waves, gamma rays, X-rays, and cosmic waves. Each of these waves and rays has a specific influence on your health and well-being. The south and west directions correspond to infrared and gamma rays and to the warm colors of red, orange and yellow. The north and east directions correspond to the ultraviolet rays and to the cool colors of green, violet, indigo and blue. Morning light contains ultraviolet rays; as the sun reaches its zenith, infrared ray are then emitted.

The effects of Color

WHITE: encompasses all color. It is the fastest wavelength and has a positive effect on creativity. White has purifying and healing qualities that are beneficial in any room. When used in the northeast and east, it will expand the positive energies coming from these directions.

VIOLET: calming and soothing, it aids psychic awareness. It is the shortest wavelength and the highest vibration in the color spectrum. A light shade of violet can be used as an accent color in a meditation room to uplift and support your spiritual practice.

INDIGO: represents depth of consciousness. It supports intuition and can be used as an accent in meditation rooms.

BLUE: stimulates the experience of inner truth and spiritual creativity and has the ability to reduce pain. It has a calming effect on the nervous system. Blue is a good color for a bedroom because it decreases blood pressure and respiratory rate. Blue can be used as an accent color in the bedroom by adding blue throw pillows, a bedspread, or drapes. Use blue in the west or northwest areas of a room for inspiration, personal growth and peace of mind.

GREEN: balances between the warm and cool colors. As the predominant color in nature, it stimulates abundance, balance, harmony, calmness and healing. It is the most beneficial color for use in hospitals. Green is also a good color for bathrooms, as it has purifying and renewing qualities. To use green as an accent color, hang green towels in your bathroom. Green can also be used in the study, as it stimulates learning. By adding plants to your study or office, you will support growth and prosperity. It is best to use green in the north area of a home or work space.

YELLOW: stimulates restful intellect, communication and concentration. A light shade of yellow is wonderful in a bedroom, particularly the master bedroom, as it improves and enhances relationships. An inexpensive way to incorporate yellow into the bedroom is in a bedspread or pillows. Due to its positive attributes, yellow can be used as a primary color throughout the home or office, yet it is most beneficial in the northeast, east, southeast, south or southwest.

ORANGE: stimulates a lighter and higher vibration than red does. Orange brings happiness; it is a social color that stimulates optimism, so it is good for any room used for social gatherings. Painting a wall in your dining room orange will stimulate your family’s digestion. You can use orange as an accent color by placing a bowl of oranges on the dining room table. As a warm color orange works especially well in the southern area of a home or office.

RED: the longest wavelength and the lowest frequency. Its natural placement is in the southeast. Red increases blood pressure, respiration and pulse rates. This color stimulates your physiology and also produces qualities such as strength, courage and steadfastness. Red can be used to overcome mental depression and fear. In an exercise room, use red to motivate or enhance activity. Use it as an accent color in the dining room or kitchen to stimulate the appetite, perhaps placing a bowl or red apples on your table or kitchen counter. Too much red can create aggressiveness, and thus is not recommended for children’s rooms.

Feng Shui practitioners believe that the best way to attract love is to adjust your environment accordingly. Dingy surroundings, piles of clutter, and self-absorbed artwork can actually drive Cupid from your door. Here, then, are 10 simple tips for finding your perfect mate... or for increasing the passion in your long-term relationship or marriage.

Replace Images of Lone Figures with Pictures of Happy Couples — Artwork has a tremendous impact on the subconscious. When you surround yourself with photos, paintings, sculptures, and knickknacks of solitary figures, you'll carry yourself accordingly. Replacing such images with representations of happy couples will make you more receptive to love.

Create Cozy Seating Arrangements — Single chairs send a loud and clear message to prospective suitors and spouses: Back off! If you're looking for love, create cozy seating arrangements from love seats, sofas, and chairs. Putting chairs at comfortable angles to each other will signal that you're ready for a relationship.

Keep the Television Out of the Bedroom — Nothing kills romance like the drone of late night television. If you have trouble falling asleep, try unwinding by reading love poetry or romantic novels. Your subconscious will shift accordingly, making you a virtual love magnet.

Treat Yourself to Sensual Bedding — That old ratty pillow from college and those serviceable sheets aren't doing your sex life any favors. Go ahead and splurge on pillows, blankets, and sheets that invite you to linger in bed.

Downsize from a King to a Queen — Sleeping on a huge mattress won't cultivate intimacy. Invest in a comfortable queen-sized bed if you'd like to find the love of your life. If you simply can't make the switch, make sure to sleep on patterned sheets to add some zest to your sex life.

The bathroom has a bad reputation in feng shui, and in some ways this is deserved, as you will discover. But it's not all negative. Comfort, cleanliness, and convenience are key ingredients to good feng shui, and our modern bathrooms provide them all.

One of the challenges posed by the modern bathroom is that there's no good place for it in the ba gua* [the feng shui map of a space], which long predates indoor plumbing. We can look at the ba gua and see at a glance that the Family area would be a good place for the living room, that a home office is well-placed in the Knowledge, Wealth, or Career sectors, and that the Marriage corner of the house is a great place for the master bedroom. But where does the bathroom go?

The bathroom is a little out of place anywhere, although some locations are more troublesome than others. The thing to keep in mind is that bathroom plumbing has a draining effect wherever it is located.

Some very difficult bathroom locations are next to or above the front door and on the second floor directly above the kitchen. These locations are particularly difficult because:

- A bathroom in the front hall, close to the door, can drain chi away before it has a chance to circulate through the rest of the house.

- A second-floor bathroom above the front door floods the main entry to your home with negative energy.

- The water energy in a bathroom above the kitchen will extinguish the hearth's fire energy, and flood the entire kitchen with negative energy. This is potentially damaging to both health and prosperity.

The worst location for a bathroom is in the center of your home, where it will destabilize the energy of the entire home. If you suspect that the bathrooms in your house are affecting important spaces, there's no need to panic. Use these simple feng shui remedies to help keep your health, wealth, and happiness from flowing down the drain:

Problem: bathroom in an important feng shui area (wealth, fame, marriage, etc.)
Solutions: a full-length mirror on the outside of the bathroom door helps deflects chi so it won't be drained away; keep sink and shower drains closed when not in use; keep the toilet seat/lid down when not in use.

Problem: bathroom in the center of the home
Solutions: paint the walls red, and place a stone, large crystal, or other earth-type object (such as a heavy ceramic bowl, vase, or statuette) in each corner to help stabilize the energy; a mirror on the outside of the door is highly recommended for this bathroom location.

Problem: bathroom over the front door or over the kitchen
Solutions: hang a faceted crystal in the center of the room; place a three-inch round mirror on the ceiling directly above the toilet to visually reverse the downward flow of water (use double-sided tape to hold the mirror in place); place earth-type objects in the corners of the room to stabilize the energy; add an image such as a bird or tree to the downstairs area below the bathroom to help lift the energy there.

Bathrooms are places for purification and cleansing, so a clean, sanitary bathroom strengthens and supports this important energy. A dirty bathroom, on the other hand, emphasizes the negative qualities of this room. If your bathroom occupies any of the more challenging locations described above, it is essential to keep it sparkling clean, tidy, and well-lit.

After implementing the necessary precautions described above, you can further improve the chi of the bathroom by making it as pleasant a space as possible. This is where you begin and end the active part of each day, so the more attractive and inviting you can make it the better.

Most of us live hectic, stressful lives, and are in serious need of soothing places where we can relax and unwind. A clean, tidy, nicely appointed bathroom invites you to soak your worries away in a hot bath with lavender-scented bath salts. Make this pampering experience even nicer with candlelight, soft music, and a pile of fresh fluffy towels with which to dry off. All-white bathroom decor can seem cold and clinical; add warmth with pastel-colored towels and accessories, colorful scented candles, and attractive artwork.

Are you tired of looking for love without success? If so, the layout, furnishings, and energy of your home and bedroom could be part of the problem. When the areas of your home affecting your love life are cluttered, missing from your floor plan, or suffering from sha chi (harmful energy) it can be difficult to find and maintain a good relationship.

A key principle of feng shui is that everything is connected energetically. This means that your thoughts, feelings, and behavior are influenced by your surroundings. A dark, untidy bedroom contributes to an atmosphere of fatigue and depression, which in turn makes it harder for you to find the energy to clean the place up. In feng shui terms, it also undermines your ability to attract and maintain a joyful and fulfilling romantic attachment. Feng shui problems can even affect your reputation, make it harder to meet new people, and lead to increased arguments and miscommunication -- all of which contribute to difficulties in your love life.

Improving your love luck with feng shui starts with understanding that attracting a partner is only part of the solution. For example, if a serious relationship has recently ended, you may need a period of healing and self-reflection before starting to date again, no matter how eager you are to connect with your next partner. Maybe you have no trouble finding dates, but can't seem to meet the right kind of person. Or perhaps you're seeing someone exclusively, but seem to be stuck just short of commitment.

Here are some quick ways you can apply basic feng shui principles to increase your chances of success in various stages of the relationship cycle:

When you need to recover from a break-up before moving on, your key task is to let go of the old relationship and reconnect with who you are as an individual. In feng shui terms, relics from past relationships - such as photographs, clothes, and mementos - hold you in the past. The stronger that old energy is, the harder it will be to move on to someone new. Remove anything that reminds you of a past failed relationship from your bedroom. This includes things that are out of sight in your closet, a dresser drawer, or under the bed. Pillows, mattresses, and bedding absorb your energy over time, so when a marriage or live-in relationship ends, it's a good idea to buy new sheets and pillows and even a new mattress if you can afford it, to help you make a fresh start. New bedding is also a good idea if you have been single and lonely for a long time. Pamper yourself during this stage, and try to do at least one thing every day just because it makes you happy.

When you are actively looking for a partner, your key task is to create space for a new romance. If your closets, dresser drawers, and bathroom shelves are filled up with your own stuff, there is no room on an energetic level for someone new to come in. That's why the best way to attract a new romance is to literally make space for it. Empty out at least one dresser drawer for your next partner's clothes. Make space in the closet, in the bathroom cabinet, and on bookcase shelves. Start with your bedroom, then move on to the rest of the house. Is there room for another person's DVDs and music in your CD rack? Where will your new sweetheart put his or her health supplements, exercise gear, notebook computer? Is there room for another car in your garage, or have you filled that space up with stuff? Make a list of all the areas of your home where your new partner might need some space, and try to free up at least 25 percent of it. If you can't clear 25 percent of the relevant spaces, just do the best you can; your strong intention to create room for a new relationship is the most important factor. When you do connect with your new love, you can look for a more spacious residence together!

When you have met a "likely prospect" and want to nurture that new relationship, your key task is to ensure that your bedroom supports romance. This is a good time to get rid of any clutter blocking the path from the front door of your home to the door of your bedroom. This will help keep the energy in your bedroom fresh and strong. In feng shui, the symbolism of what we see is very important, so make sure your bedroom says "romance" in some way. Focus on these areas: 1) what you first see when you enter the bedroom; 2) the wall across from the foot of the bed; 3) the relationship area of the room (the right-hand corner on the side of the room opposite the door, and/or the SW sector). Just about anything that means romance to you can be appropriate feng shui imagery for your bedroom. Traditional romantic symbols such as hearts, cupids, and pictures of happy couples always work well, as does a faceted feng shui crystal hung in the relationship area or over your bed. Look for opportunities to group objects in pairs, such as placing two pink or red candles or a bud vase with two red silk roses on your bedside table. Pale green is also a good color for new romance.

Although these simple steps are just a few of the many ways you can use feng shui to improve your love luck, they will do a lot to shift the energy of your home. As your environment becomes more welcoming to romance, your own energy will shift as a result. When you are clear in your heart about the kind of love you want, and take action to welcome it into your home, your dream of lasting happiness with a wonderful partner really can come true.
When you want to improve your sex life.

The family gua is all about your ancestry, your lineage, your relationships with family members, and really, the very foundation from which you grew. This gua is located in the left-center portion of your home Sometimes it is easier to keep some of these past memories and events tucked way under some old rug, but hidden or not, they are still a part of who you are today. When this gua is properly feng shuied, you are free to fully express who you are. You also find it uncommonly easy to get along with family members as well as in life, because you have the self-confidence and courage to venture out beyond where others would stop. You have a secure foundation to build upon. And with a strong foundation, your life is much more stable.

Setting up enhancements for the family gua is usually an easy one. Since wood is the element, you can simply place photos of friends and family in wooden frames in a display that pleases you. Not everyone needs to be a blood relative either. This gua helps you be treated as one if the family in many situations - blood related or not. Imagine for a second, if every political leader had pictures of themselves shaking hands with every other political leader here in the family gua. I'd think it would be a lot harder to start a war with a leader you once thought of as family.

The family area of my living room is one of my favorite places in my house. I placed pictures of friends and family in an assortment of wooden frames and put them on top of a foyer table. And above the table I hung a huge framed mirror. That means I have the element of wood AND the element of water (mirrors equal water in feng shui) - both great elements for the family gua!

Best Color Choice: Green

Other Good Color Choices: Black and Blue

Best Element Choice: Wood

Other Good Element Choice: Water

Feng Shui is the study of the "built" environment and while feng shui does look at the larger environment surrounding the structure, there are no hard and fast rules about the landscaping. Feng Shui is primarily focused on the Qi within a structure, as that is what has the most direct effect on the people. When it comes to the outside environment, the main points of concern is that the landscaping is beautiful and in balance with the rest of the environment. Living in a beautiful environment is much more supportive than living in an environment that is an eyesore. You can tell the Qi of a neighborhood or area by how green and glossy the trees and plants are.

Some general rules: Pathways should flow like a meandering stream not a straight road. As to trees, they are fine as long as they are not placed in a direct line with any entrances, especially the main entrance. Try to keep a balance of yin and yang (dark and light) when thinking of the trees. Avoid trees that will completely block the light. Too much of anything is not good. Again, balance is the key . Shrubbery is okay as long as it is kept neat and prevented from overgrowing. Trees and shrubbery can be used to block harsh Qi such as strong winds. Grass does not pose any problems. Strive for beauty.

Flowers and other colorful plants can be used as long as they fit within the environment and follow the rules of the 5 elements . "Wood produces fire, fire produces earth, earth produces metal, metal produces water, water produces wood." Wood is green, fire is red, earth is tans or yellows, metal is white or gold, water is blue or black. Avoid using them in a destructive combination such that "wood uproots earth, earth blocks water, water douses fire, fire melts metal, and metal chops wood". Consider the direction the building "sits." For example if the building faces to the North and sits to the South, than this is a Li building (Li is the Fire trigram). This house would be supported by a lot of red flowers, but would not benefit from blue or black colors. A house that sits to the west and faces east (Tui is a metal trigram) would benefit from white and gold flowers. Reds and purples should be avoided. This can also apply to the color of the house trim as well. These are all general rules and while their effect can be minimal on the house itself, following the rules of balance can support the house and its occupants.

The two items that need to be looked at carefully are rocks and water. Since they are both part of the five elements and are used to remedy certain situations in the greater environment, they need to be placed very carefully. Water in the west is not good, while in the southwest and east it can assist prosperity, during this time period. These directions should not be in front of, or behind the house or building. If they are, it takes a qualified practitioner to determine if the water will have a positive or negative effect. If you are striving for the effect of the water element , then it is better to not use an earthen container such as a fountain made of rocks since earth blocks water in the cycle of the elements. Metallic containers work well as metal strengthens water. I have seen my clients use metal troughs effectively with beautiful plants and flowers planted around it to blend it with the environment. Ponds and pools can be used if placed under the guidance of a trained Feng Shui practitioner.

The same can be said of rocks, especially large decorative rocks. Because these are used in certain situations to correct for a problem, they need to be placed under the guidance of a Feng Shui practitioner. Placed haphazardly, they could have an adverse effect on the prosperity of the building if used in front of or in back of the structure. This takes a qualified Feng Shui practitioner to determine if the placement of these elements is needed or not. Feng Shui folklore states that a building should have a mountain behind it to support it. By using rocks and earth , you can create this mountain. While this sounds good, this is not true in every case. Each building is unique and needs to be looked at on a case by case basis.

To summarize, plants and other "wood" elements are fine anywhere as long as they do not block the Qi of the building and are used in balance. Colors can be used to assist the home as long as they fall within the rules of the five elements. Water and Rocks need to be placed under the advice of a trained practitioner to avoid adversely effecting the people or the prosperity. When placed correctly, they can have a very supportive effect on the building or house. All in all, the goal of Feng Shui is to create a comfortable and beautiful environment for the people. Strive for this when landscaping.

Living in the Desert

In the last ten years as the cities are becoming over developed and housing has become unaffordable for some people, developers are moving people to our cities' edges. Inexpensive housing is available in the desert and depleted agricultural areas such as Palmdale, Lancaster, Apple Valley, Riverside, Corona and Hemet. Here, the rent you were paying in the city can easily convert to mortgage for a house. Despite the longer commute, people are attracted to the benefits of owning their own home.

This is the case for many of my clients in recent years. One such client, Fred, has lived in the high desert area for almost ten years and only recently when he lost his job did he decide to call me. He has read a book or two and tried doing feng shui adjustments on his own. It was more complicated than he realized and decided it would be better to call a professional.

As I make the two hour drive to Fred's home in the high desert, I could not help but notice the landscape of rock piles and haggard rocky hills and mountains. Even as I approached the residential areas, few houses have grass and most have rock gardens. It is obvious the soil here is barren and dry. These earth energies are weak and depleting. It is not easy for anything to grow well here. There is likely to be similar results in the resident's lifestyle and well being. The people living here may find that it is not easy to keep savings, even if they can earn an income. Although their housing costs may be lower, this is often offset by what the desert lacks: ample water, fertile soil, and comfortable climate. Residents need to pay for more expensive water, higher air conditioning to maintain livable temperatures and deal with more health problems in the dry climate. The desert requires a lot of input - more water and nourishment - without giving back in return.

Fred's house is on an irregular plot located in a cul-de-sac. Being located within a cul-de-sac tends to be very quiet. The energies are slower and more stagnant. Living within a cul-de-sac usually makes it more difficult to attain energy for more opportunities and higher income. Income tends to be remain the same even if expenses rise. For a growing family such as his, it is important that they be off an active street that brings energy.

There are two rock mountains facing his house and there is a gradual downward slope in the backyard to a view of the valley behind. The rocky mountains in front of the house suppress its energy, further compounding the difficulty of the residents to progress. Having a downward slope with a view in the back lets energy descend away from the house. Without any support, the house's energy is constantly weakening, causing the residents to be vulnerable to trouble as well. Unless, a family is very strong, it is usually difficult to survive very long in this situation without some devastation.

The backyard is completely dry sandy soil with many rocks. Surrounded by dryness, it is easy for residents to feel stagnant, suffer chronic fatigue, illness, inflammation, emotional instability and temper. Of course one can still live there and make a living, but they are unlikely to be progressive.

The desert and agricultural areas are more suitable for retirees who are not concerned about income and it makes sense for them to have economical housing. However, although some elderly fare better in warmer areas, the dry heat can be too harsh. Medical workers who cater to the elderly are generally in higher demand and people in these fields may be able to make a living here as is the case for Fred and his beautiful wife.

Still, the phenomenon remains the same, as humans, we require a comfort zone where energy is balanced. A place where the there is comfortable weather, convenience to work and supplies, an abundance of vegetation to provide the shade and oxygen we need, inexpensive water and other basic natural resources that support our survival. Being surrounded by barren rocks and sand depletes us. Those who are lucky with a stable job, can maintain a living, but if one were to suddenly lose their job, one can easily be bankrupt in the desert.

The northeast/southwest orientation of Fred's house does not match the Eastern Direction Pattern energies of him and his wife, Greta. It does match their daughter, Marisol. The master bedroom is located within the southwest with their bed located directly over the kitchen stove downstairs. I pointed out that having the bedroom in the southwest for them brings argument to their marriage, trouble makers at work, problems with skin, stomach, uterus and catching colds. Sleeping over the stove has in 9 out of 10 cases caused cysts or tumors. Fred and his wife immediately responded that everything I mention has happened. Fred shows me his arms and explain he has always had skin problems since he moved here. Greta grasped her body near her chest and said she had breast cysts. They looked at each other and admitted they argue plenty and it usually had to do with problems with people at work. They wanted to be out of this room.

The only other room that matched them was the east bedroom. Unfortunately, it is located over the garage. I explained that the garage is unstable due to its function of storing moving vehicles. But they had no other choice so I recommended placing three rose quartz crystals around their bed to release stress and enhance their energies. A special empowered feng shui painting of two elephants for stability and strength can be placed facing them to reinforce their energies as well.

With the house on a northeast/southwest axis, there is no main door that faced their positive direction. It is vital for them to bring in energy that matches them. I recommended opening a southeast facing side door or angling their main northeast door to the north. This should bring in energy to support them.

Finally, the stove is located in a matching direction for Fred and Greta so income is there but the energies of the master bedroom and desert around them tends to deplete it easily. Money comes and goes. Fred could not agree more. He explained that anytime they had savings, there would be an expense to eat it right up. They have managed to live like this for ten years, but with Fred's recent job loss, he is concerned.

Looking at the floor plan again, I explained that if they ever had an opportunity to move to a better city or home with better feng shui, they should do it. Even with the adjustments, it is hard to say how much it can overcome the insatiable energies of the depleting desert. With Fred and Greta's energies being so strong, allowing them to survive ten years here, they can only do that much better in a more comfortable environment with better feng shui.

Finding the Center of a Built Structure

The technique of finding the center is called ‘Li Ji’. Here is a short description to guide you.

In determining the physical center of an octagon, a square, a rectangular, we simply connect the extremeties of these structures by imaginary lines, while these lines will remain within the structure itself. The physical center will be where these lines cross. For a triangle, we cut it into six slices.

For circles and oval structures, we may extend the imaginary lines to somewhat outside the structure until we reach an imaginary square or rectangle. Again, where these lines cross we will find the physical center of the object.

It becomes different when we need to find the center for irregular or asymmetrical structures, where we may not just need to extend the lines outside the structure, but here we may need to compensate.

For an L-shape, we first divide the structure into two subsectors after which we determine the center of each one of these shapes. Then we connect the centers of these subsectors and we will find the physical center of the entire structure somewhere along this line, proportionally more towards the bigger one of the two shapes.

Projecting your Flying Star chart
Once you found the physical center of the structure, determine the exact directions by establishing the north-south axis. Superimpose the Flying Star chart over the floorplan according to the actual directions.

You can determine the physical center for each floor and each individual room in your house. The same Flying Star chart that applies to your house, will – under normal conditions – apply for all floors and all individual rooms.

Important note
You need to distinguish between physical center and Qi center. The physical center of your house may not be the Qi center within your interior. Everything can be considered the center of Qi, as long as we choose it as our point of reference.

Moreover, the Stars will not behave in any rigid way that would be perhaps suggested by the demarcation lines in the Luo Pan. So, whenever you determine the physical center, sure, try to do this part correctly, but once you found it, and auditing the house, don’t be too schizophrenic about your applications, because your audit does not depend on inches.
